Blog: Sierra Club and Planned Parenthood Endorsements 2010
1. Sierra Club Endorsements
http://illinois.sierraclub.org/vote/complete.htm
Much better than 2008 especially endorsement of Dan Seals for Congress IL 10th Alexi Giannoulias for US Senator and Pat Quinn for Governor. I was also glad to see positive endorsements for other Democratic congressional candidates. The endorsements are based only on issues impacting the environment and the global climate crisis.
As I recall, the Sierra Club, of which I am a member, had endorsed Kirk in 2008 and was neutral in the 2006 contest IL 10th because the organization concluded (erroneously) the Congressman was a trustworthy supporter of the environmental, climate, and energy agenda.
The “apology” Kirk issued that he voted earlier for this agenda because of the “narrow focus” of his IL 10th constituents did not endear him to the Sierra Club.
2. What’s Up with Planned Parenthood on their Endorsements?
The organization rates candidates only on the issue of support for womens reproductive choice.

Note resounding endorsements of Dan Seals for Congress IL 10th and Russ Feingold for US Senator WI
Planned Parenthood endorsed also Alexi Giannoulias for US Senator and also endorsed all IL Democratic Candidates for US House. From my perspective, Planned Parenthood was frightened when Republican US Senate Candidate in IL Mark Kirk actively sought the endorsement in the primary of the vocal pro-lifer Sara Palin (Mamma Grizzly Bear). That deliberate Kirk stragegy upheld the claim made at an earlier Tenth Dems University presentation in Deerfield of Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, I L 9th, a vocal pro-choice advocate. Kirk was more than willing to brush aside Planned Parenthood, which had endorsed him in earlier elections, because he felt a Palin endorsement of his candidacy would endear him to the local Tea Party activists. Pro-choice supporters by now hopefully understand how Mark Kirk took Planned Parenthood for a ride and brushed aside the organization when no longer needed. The best response to this charade will be a large vote cast by pro-choice women and their male supporters for the US Senate candidacy in IL of Democrat Alexi Giannoulias.
As long as I live, I will never forget the spectacle of Mark Kirk in his 2002 debate with opponent Hank Perritt at Congregation Beth Shalom Northbrook opposing embroynic stem cell R&D (research and development) on the basis of protecting against cloning a human being.

Blog: Tea Party Vulnerability in Alaska
FYI from Moveon.org
How would you like to plant the Democratic flag in Sarah Palin’s backyard?
We have a real shot at winning Alaska with polls showing we’re now ahead of the Tea Party candidate. This would be a major blow to Sarah Palin (I’m told you can see Russia from her house) and the Tea Party, who expected to waltz to victory.
But because it’s such a late-breaking opportunity, it wasn’t in our budget. Although we can pull this off if we get $175,000 in the door today. We’ve got the ads on the air and the turnout operation on the ground. This win would be huge.
If you’re looking for a way to make a difference in the final hours, here you go. Kick in $5 and let’s win this.

News: Lawlor Backtracks on Commitment
Just days after sending a mailer where he claimed he would be taking “the high road,” political appointee Aaron Lawlor attacked his opponent, Kay Hoogland, in a letter to Lake County residents.
Earlier this week, Lawlor had sent a mailer to voters committing to “taking the high road” and avoiding “negative attacks…. That’s just not me” he said.
It was only a matter of days before his campaign committee attacked Hoogland. Under the name of incumbent GOP politicians the campaign attacks Hoogland’s contributors.
This type of hypocrisy is exactly what Hoogland, a first-time candidate, is running against. “We can back up every single statement that we have made in our campaign communications,” Hoogland said. “He cannot say the same thing about his own campaign.”
Although Lawlor accused Hoogland of being bought off by organizations, three out of Hoogland’s four largest contributors are individuals; in fact, over 70% of Hoogland’s contributions are from individuals. “I was not surprised to see how many Businesses and CEO’s have contributed to him as the incumbent,” Hoogland said.
“Lawlor’s accusations fly in the face of my 25-year career as a lawyer and executive for Tribune Company and Motorola. My donors include family, friends, $5 mom and pop contributors, small business owners, business professionals, as well as labor and professional organizations.” All told, Hoogland has had over 120 contributors, and her broad support spans Democrats, Independents, and Republicans.
Hoogland is proud to have received the endorsement and support of the Lake County Federation of Teachers, an organization that represents hundreds of people in our district. “Our schools are one of the things that makes Lake County great, and Lawlor’s back-handed attack on the teachers of our district is just silly,” she said.
Lawlor’s limited work experience is exclusively in political consulting and political positions. “My opponent does not have the business experience, legal expertise, or maturity to oversee any type of collective bargaining, much less hurl insults at me through political surrogates,” Hoogland observed. “I guess that’s why his own campaign materials list ‘political consultant’ as topping the list of his work experience.”
Political gamesmanship is not the leadership we deserve during a time of economic distress that affects virtually every household. “I’ve been walking and riding my bike through our district since May. Rarely a day goes by that I don’t talk to residents who are facing a personal economic crisis and are tired of politics as usual in Lake County. Those voters tell me it’s time we elect someone with the business skills and experience to help guide Lake County through this economic crisis and put voters’ interests first,” stated Hoogland.

“I simply misremembered it wrong”– Mark Kirk, June 3, 2010
No one knows Mark Kirk better than we, the residents of his congressional district, know him. The first president from Illinois, Abraham Lincoln, said that you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time. Unfortunately, Mark Kirk only needs to fool a majority of the people on November 2 to become our next Senator. We can’t let that happen. This is the Mark Kirk we know:
Few top ten lists can beat Mark Kirk’s top ten lies about his military record. Kirk (1) falsely claimed he served “in” Operation Iraqi Freedom; (2) falsely claimed to “command the war room in the Pentagon:” (3) falsely claimed to have won the U.S. Navy’s Intelligence Officer of the Year award; (4) falsely claimed to have been shot at by the Iraqi Air Defense network; (5) falsely claimed to be a veteran of Desert Storm; (6) falsely claimed to be the only lawmaker to serve during Operation Iraqi Freedom; (7) falsely claimed to have been shot at in Kosovo; (8) falsely claimed to have been shot at in Kandahar; (9) falsely claimed to have been repeatedly “deployed” to Afghanistan; and (10) falsely claimed not to have violated Defense Department rules on mingling politics with his military service.
Kirk also lied about his teaching experience and toddlers bringing guns to nursery school.
Kirk even lied about formative life events, claiming that as a teenager he stood on an overturned sailboat and watched the sun set, when in fact he was rescued in the middle of the afternoon.
And as the Washington Monthly reminds us, “Kirk claimed that China was drilling for oil off Cuba’s coast, but that was proven false. He told an elaborate tale last year about France taking a tougher approach to Somali pirates than the U.S., but every relevant facet of Kirk’s story turned out to be complete fiction. Kirk also said that if only the U.S. would embrace more coastal drilling, we could stop buying ‘oil from the Iranians.’ In reality, the U.S. doesn’t buy oil from Iran.”
Kirk slipped on another self-tossed banana peel when he claimed that the Republicans voted against Obama’s stimulus bill (which, by the way, helped avert a second Depression ) because of a memo Kirk wrote. Progress Illinois called this assertion “absurd.”
In addition to the outright lies, there are the flip-flops. As Alexi Giannoulias said, “Like a weather vane, Mr. Kirk’s votes on the issues can be predicted by the direction the political winds are blowing at this time.” Read More
