Blog News: Democratic Candidates Show Strong Fundraising Compared to Incumbent Dold

February 1, 2012 (Highland Park, IL) – F.E.C. fundraising filings for 4th quarter 2011 show that Democratic candidates for the 10th Congressional District in Illinois are raising more money than incumbent Robert Dold (R). Strong fundraising shows strong support for a Democratic candidate to win the US IL-10 seat.

The Democratic candidates vying for the nomination in March have raised more than $420,000 in the 4th quarter combined. Rep. Dold raised only $356,831 in the 4th quarter for his re-election campaign.

Many freshmen Republicans who were supported by Tea Party donations in 2010 have found their 2011 fundraising takes increasingly diminished compared to Democratic challengers. This trend was noted by USA Today, which described the fundraising drop as “buyers’ remorse” in an article ‟GOP freshmen see fundraising dwindle,” (11-25-11).

Democrats around the United States have been energized to actively campaign and raise funds for many Democratic challengers. President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign has also been buoyed by strong record-setting fundraising.

The Illinois Tenth Congressional District Democrats is a volunteer group with members from all parts of the 10th Congressional District. The 10th District contains portions of both Cook and Lake Counties stretching from Winnetka through Waukegan and from Lake Michigan west through Round Lake. The District includes all or part of the following townships: Avon, Benton, Deerfield, Grant, Libertyville, Moraine, Shields, Waukegan, West Deerfield, Vernon, Zion and parts of Fremont, Lake Villa, Maine, New Trier, Newport, Northfield, Warren, and Wheeling.

Who Really Represents the 10th District?

On nearly 90 percent of significant recorded House votes, the Illinois 10th Congressional District is represented by Joe Walsh. Yes, that Joe Walsh. The one who in July told President Obama to “quit lying” about the effects of the artificially manufactured crisis on extension of the federal debt limit while playing fast and loose with “the full faith and credit” of the United States. The same Joe Walsh who calls himself a card-carrying member of the Tea Party, who would hamstring the federal government by drastically cutting such essential services as Medicare and Pell grants.

 

“Wait just a minute!” you may be thinking. “Joe Walsh represents the 8th District. The 10th District is represented by Robert Dold. Well, yes. But given Dold’s voting record, the 10th might just as well have sent Joe Walsh to Congress.

 

In a careful analysis of 949 recorded votes in the first session of the 112th Congress (January – December 2011), I reviews votes of Rep. Walsh and Rep. Dold. Recorded Congressional votes include a hodgepodge of procedural votes, quorum calls, approval of post office namings and other largely ceremonial acts, and votes on substantive legislation. I limited my analysis to votes pertaining to final passage of House bills (excluding amendments). …
