To the Editor:
“Have you no shame, sir?”
That strong accusation was from Rep. Joe Walsh directed at President Barack Obama in Walsh’s viral video about the debt ceiling crisis. It was a question that was reminiscent of a famous one – “Have you no sense of decency, sir?” – which was asked of Sen. Joe McCarthy by Joe Welch, chief counsel of the U.S. Army, during the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954.
Walsh’s stinging question could boomerang, because it could easily be asked of him in reference to his alleged refusal to pay more than $100,000 in child support. The child support issue is his latest in a line of financial troubles, and it may be indicative of a chronic condition.
After the child support story broke, Walsh said, “… And as your congressman, I promise you that I am going to put my head down, get back to work and continue to fight for our freedoms and our children’s future.”
How can I trust he’d fight for the future of all American children, when there’s a dark cloud looming over his head regarding his ability to financially care for his own children and their future? I would have more confidence that he could attain the macro-level goal if he could first accomplish without question the micro-level one.
Walsh has been called a “tea party champion” and a cable TV network celebrity. Too bad he cannot apply some of his enthusiasm and zeal for politics toward meeting his personal financial obligations.
