We're going to have the best educated American people in the world.

George Bush

2008 Democratic Presidential Candidate Profiles

announced candidates with online campaign websites, listed alphabetically

Joseph Biden

U.S. Senator - Delaware

Joe Biden was born November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the first of four siblings in an Irish-Catholic family. The family later moved to a middle-class neighborhood in Delaware. His father was a car salesman, and together with his mother, they worked hard to teach their children to stand up for what matters most.

Joe graduated from The University of Delaware and Syracuse Law School and served on the New Castle County Council. Then, at age 29, against almost impossible odds, he became one of the youngest people ever elected to the United States Senate

Hillary Clinton

U.S. Senator - New York

Today I am announcing that I will form an exploratory committee to run for president.

And I want you to join me not just for the campaign but for a conversation about the future of our country -- about the bold but practical changes we need to overcome six years of Bush administration failures.

I am going to take this conversation directly to the people of America, and I'm starting by inviting all of you to join me in a series of web chats over the next few days.

The stakes will be high when America chooses a new president in 2008.

As a senator, I will spend two years doing everything in my power to limit the damage George W. Bush can do. But only a new president will be able to undo Bush's mistakes and restore our hope and optimism.

Only a new president can renew the promise of America -- the idea that if you work hard you can count on the health care, education, and retirement security that you need to raise your family. These are the basic values of America that are under attack from this administration every day.

And only a new president can regain America's position as a respected leader in the world.

Christopher Dodd

U.S. Senator - Connecticut

Chris Dodd got his start in public service when he entered the Peace Corps in 1966. His service sent him to the Dominican Republic where he worked with rural communities and became fluent in Spanish. When his two year commitment in the Dominican Republic was fulfilled, he enlisted in the Army and served in the reserves.

Chris Dodd has long believed that the best social program is a good job. To that end, he has dedicated himself to helping Americans create and win the best jobs in the 21st century global economy. While helping American companies compete abroad, Senator Dodd also believes that we must do more to help our companies keep good jobs here at home. This includes tax incentives to locate here in the United States, research and development credits and investments, job training, and policies that will reign in the skyrocketing cost of health care for employers and employees alike. In his view, American policy should encourage the export of American goods and services - not American jobs.

Senator Dodd a long-term supporter of measures to bring fiscal discipline into the federal budget-making process. These include authoring some of the first legislation that would require the federal government to operate on a pay-as-you-go basis. He also has long fought to reform our campaign finance laws and successfully authored and enacted legislation preventing members of Congress from receiving speaking fees.

John Edwards

Former Senator - North Carolina

John Edwards is running for president because he wants to build an America that lives up to its promise - one where we all share in prosperity at home and one that shows real moral leadership around the world.

The next president faces tremendous challenges - from poverty and lack of health care, to energy and global warming, to fixing the mess in Iraq.

We cannot wait until the next president is elected to begin to address these challenges. If we want to live in a moral and just America tomorrow, we must act today.

We're going to reach out to millions of people to let them know it's still okay to dream big dreams, and do everything we can to make them real - because that's what America is all about. If you're ready to change our country, please join us.

Mike Gravel

Former Senator - Alaska

Every day I receive emails and letters from people from all over our country who are distressed over the war in Iraq and frustrated with our lack of leadership in Washington.

The government is not listening to the will of the American people. In the latest gallup poll (Jan 17) 62% of those polled believe that the situation in Iraq was not worth going to war over. It is not enough for congress to merely voice opposition to the 'surge' of over 20,000 new troops, nor is it enough to threaten to withhold funding or pass non binding, symbolic resolutions. We must demand an end to this war now - not 6 or 12 or 24 months from now. We must stand up and speak out in our homes and schools, churches and synagogues, in newspapers and on television. In the city streets in towns all across America, we cannot stay silent in the face of such a tragedy.

In America 1 in 3 high school students drops out of high school, and 46 million Americans have no health insurance, while hundreds of billions of our dollars flow to the coffers of George Bush's corporate allies in Iraq. Meanwhile the war drags on and on and the death toll of our men and women in uniform and Iraqi civilians rises daily. These numbers represent an indictment of our government.

We must restore morality to our government. We must reject institutionalized torture and the loss of our civil liberties. The solution lies with you; the voter. Take back your country. Take back your future and the future of our children. Elect a President who will pursue cooperative diplomacy and defend the honor of our great nation - a President who will work with you to restore our country to a land of opportunity and fairness.

Together we can heal these war wounds and live in peace and prosperity.

Dennis Kucinich

US Representative - Ohio

Dennis Kucinich's courageous and visionary presidential campaign excited a new generation of young Americans to involvement in the 2004 Democratic Primary elections. His speech to the 2004 Democratic Convention will long be remembered as a clarion call to purpose in the Democratic Party.

Kucinich's Presidential candidacy was a continuation of his challenge to the war in Iraq. He led 125 Democratic Members of Congress in opposition to the war. His "Prayer for America" speech in Los Angeles in February of 2002 inspired tens of thousands of emails, many urging him to run for President. He insisted early on there was no proof of any "weapons of mass destruction". He toured the country, warning America about the dangers of attacking a nation which did not attack us. Today he is seen as the prophet who predicted hundreds of billions of dollars wasted, countless lives lost, America's credibility in the world severely undermined. Today he insists that the United States must withdraw from Iraq.

Barack Obama

U.S. Senator - Illinois

As many of you know, over the last few months I have been thinking hard about my plans for 2008. Running for the presidency is a profound decision - a decision no one should make on the basis of media hype or personal ambition alone - and so before I committed myself and my family to this race, I wanted to be sure that this was right for us and, more importantly, right for the country.

I certainly didn't expect to find myself in this position a year ago.

But as I've spoken to many of you in my travels across the states these past months; as I've read your emails and read your letters; I've been struck by how hungry we all are for a different kind of politics.

So I've spent some time thinking about how I could best advance the cause of change and progress that we so desperately need.

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are...a few...Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is neglible and they are stupid.

-- Dwight D. Eisenhower, November 8, 1954
