500+ Strong Rock at the 10th District Democratic Convention
More than 500 citizens gathered Sunday in Deerfield at the 10th District Democratic Convention – raucous, rollicking, rowdy – but one thing was certain: the 500+ conventioneers
and more than 60 candidates and elected officials in attendance all spoke with one voice.
While “Change” has been the overriding motif during the 2008 election season, the themes at the convention were “Unity” and “Growth” – themes echoed by

speakers from Senator Dick Durbin to 10th Congressional candidates Jay Footlik and Dan Seals to many local officeholders and candidates. Speakers vowed to unify after the primary to change the direction of the country and the district. And speakers marveled at the change in Democratic numbers, noting that the growth of grassroots volunteers in a few short years was remarkable.

Hon. Dick Durbin, the senior senator from Illinois and the Majority Whip (the second highest ranking position in the United States Senate), delivered the keynote address and showed the same grace, wit and humility that have marked his many years in public service.
The chair of the event was Zane Smith, who was a congressional candidate for the 10th District in the 2006 primary. Most in attendance agreed that Smith deserved some sort of medal for keeping the event on schedule with the dozens of politicians speaking at the event.

Most of the local candidates running in any precinct within the geographic boundaries of the 10th District attended, as well as representatives from the four Democratic presidential hopefuls.
The convention was hosted by the Tenth Congressional District Democrats, or Tenth Dems, a group of grassroots political volunteers who formed the organization in late 2003 to help elect Democrats to all levels of government throughout the 10th District.

The Tenth Dems members conducted a straw poll for the congressional and presidential primaries. In the congressional race, Seals got 180 votes and Footlik got 44 in the poll. For president, Barack Obama received 131 votes; Hillary Clinton, 72; John Edwards, 12; and Dennis Kucinich, 6. While the convention was open to the public, only Tenth Dems members were eligible to vote.
Kristin Lems, a veteran local folksinger who was featured on the twice Grammy-nominated CD anthology “The Best of Broadside,” performed at the event, including a rousing rendition of “This Little Light of Mine.” For more information on Kristin or to purchase a CD, you can go to www.kristinlems.com.

In order to keep the momentum going, Tenth Dem activists should vote in the Illinois primary on Feb. 5, then sign up to hear Hon. Lou Lang of Skokie – a member of the Illinois House for over 20 years, and a leader in the state on issues affecting seniors, women, working families and education – deliver a post-Super Tuesday primary analysis on Feb. 7. You can go to www.tenthdemsu.org.

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are...a few...Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is neglible and they are stupid.
