Letter to the Editor
Daily Herald 10/25/10
I am a former president of the Cook Memorial Public Library District and I want to take issue with the way Lake County board candidate Aaron Lawlor states in his campaign literature that he “developed the plan to build a new library in Vernon Hills without a tax referendum.”
Past library board members, library staff, and residents knew for 20 years that we needed improved library access in Vernon Hills. We also knew that the easy way was to bypass the voters and issue debt to finance the plans. However, past library boards followed the responsible path and asked the voters to approve a new library referendum and were repeatedly turned down at the polls. Rather than facing the voters again, Aaron took the easy way out, as president of the library board, and saddled taxpayers with $14 million in debt to pay for the library. That is not leadership.
There is another candidate running for our county board seat, Kay Hoogland. Kay was a business executive at Motorola and she understands what businesses need to grow in Lake County. Even better, she wants to shake up the status quo and the business-as-usual attitude on the county board and bring in some common sense and fiscal responsibility. So I ask you to please consider voting for Kay Hoogland for County Board. She’ll be a breath of fresh air.
Sincerely,
John Keister
